Anastasiya & Alexander - Some facts about Russia

You might have some ideas by your own about Russia, but we are going to give you some general facts about this country and people there.


-- The population is 147.5 million people and 3/4 live in the European part and 1/4 lives in the Asian part of Russia (Siberia and the Far East regions).  Most of these people are Russians (81%), the others are Ukrainians, Tatars, Belorussians, Polish, Germans, Jews and Caucasians.
--The language spoken is mostly Russian. This language uses the Cyrillic alphabet instead of Latin and is one of the five most spoken languages in the world.
--Talking about weather, it is difficult to say exactly which temperature is here because of how country is big. Anyway, average temperature differences between the warmest (July) and coldest (January) vary as much as 65 degrees Celsius.
--There are 11 time zones all over the territory of Russia.
--This country is famous by Russian ballet, ice hockey, figure skating, the first person who travelled in space and many of writers, composers and painters. 
--Russians consider themselves as educational society. Reading books is important part of their life. This tradition has begun since 18th century.
--Russians are good-natured people with certain beliefs which may seem strange at the first sight, but quite understandable if you look a bit closer.
